Fired Shell Casings

Many agencies working with DLI achieve success rates exceeding 75% Results

Fired cartridge casings are silent witnesses to devastation, each one representing shattered lives and communities deeply affected by the violence they mark. This evidence represents one of the most challenging forms of evidence for DNA testing, yet they are also one of the most frequent type of evidence left at a crime scene. Their small,  metallic surfaces and the extreme heat generated during discharge often leave little recoverable DNA, making traditional collection methods unlikely to yield results.

In 2016, we introduced our proprietary DNA method for fired cartridge casings. Our screening process, SPENTSHELL®, combines our custom-designed buffer solution with an optimized swabbing technique. After extensively comparing all published methods, we developed a protocol that integrates the most effective practices with new technology. This innovative approach consistently produces superior results, recovering more DNA than standard methods—even from low-level or degraded samples such as fired casings.

Whether your agency is submitting a single casing or hundreds, we’re equipped to deliver efficient, high-quality results that stand up in court.
