New ways to get DNA from rootless hair shafts
Hair evidence has historically been limited to mitochondrial DNA testing, which is less informative and not eligible for CODIS entry on it’s own. Nuclear DNA is the preferred method of forensic DNA testing but is difficult to recover from hair shafts, especially when no root is present.
Results with only 1-6 cm of hair
DNA Labs International has pioneered techniques that allow us to recover nuclear DNA from as little as 1 cm of hair and rootless hair shafts. By using optimized extraction protocols and advanced tools from our DNA Toolbox™, such as mitochondrial DNA analysis or next-generation sequencing, we can now provide more informative results from hair samples previously considered unsuitable for forensic testing. This capability opens new avenues for solving cases involving hair evidence, particularly when other biological materials are not available.
